Keynote Speaker

Dr. Cheryl Grills

Dr. Cheryl Grills is a clinical psychologist by training with a current emphasis in Community Psychology. She is Professor of Psychology at Loyola Marymount University and Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Grills’ current work in the area of racial stress focuses on training associated with racism, racial stress, implicit bias and the development of community-based self-help models to address the negative effects of racism on people of African ancestry in the US and globally.

  

Keynote Presentation - Mental Health in the Black Community: The Role of Community, Family, Culture, and Context

 

 

The conference afternoon agenda will include panel presentations, group discussions and interactive activities.


The goal of this conference is to increase attendees understanding of mental health and wellness as well as prevention and treatment, as it relates to Black people by understanding the intersection of history, context, family, community and culture and the interconnected and overlapping factors that contribute to mental wellness and treatment. Attendees will: 

  • Understand the role that history, context, family and community has on mental health

  • Increase knowledge about cultural values and norms of Black people

  • Understand the social determinants of mental health and ways to reduce racial stress

  • Learn from people with lived experiences.

*Free Morning Refreshments, Soul Food Lunch and Entertainment*

 WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Staff that Provide Services to the Black Community; Consumers; Family Members and all other Stakeholders.

Approval Pending - Course meets the qualifications for 5-hours of CE Credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences; however, you must attend the entire training to qualify for CE Credit. Certificates will be issued within 30 days. City of Berkeley is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for MFTs and LCSWs. City of Berkeley maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. If you would like to attend this free training, please email bawhite@cityofberkeley.info.
