Hay Field Improvement Workshop

When: Friday, Oct 11th 9am – 2pm

Where: Skagit Valley College (221 Weber Way, Friday Harbor), Beaverton Valley Preserve, and Oak Knoll Farm

Speakers: Steve Fransen (WSU Forage Research Agronomist), Brook Brouwer (SJC WSU Extension Director), Bruce Gregory (SJI Conservation District , Andrew Borner (Natural Plant Solutions, LLC), Sarah Pope and Adam Greene (Oak Knoll Farm)

Topics: Improving forage quality and yield in hay fields. Indoor presentation on pasture calendar, soil fertility and stubble height management. Two field visits to current research plots with discussions about trials on fertilizer, no-till seeding, and pasture aeration.

*Please bring your own lunch* Coffee, tea, and snacks will be served.

Agenda:

9:00am-11:00am: Presentation at Skagit Valley College, Upper level, Classroom A (221 Weber Way. Friday Harbor) Speaker: Steve Fransen, Forage Research Agronomist. Topics: Pasture calendar, nutrient and stubble height management.

11:00am- 11:30pm: brown bag lunch (BYO Lunch)

15 min: travel to SJC Land Bank Beaverton Marsh Preserve

11:45am- 12:45pm SJC Land Bank Beaverton Marsh Preserve - Extension Director Brook Brouwer will discuss current fertilizer and no till seeding trials. Bruce Gregory, SJI Conservation District, and Andrew Borner, Natural Plant Solutions LLC, will discuss seeding with the no-till drill and results.

15 min: travel to Oak Knoll Farm

1:00pm-2:00pm: Oak Knoll Farm- Extension Director, Brook Brouwer, and farmers, Sarah Pope and Adam Greene, will discuss preliminary results from the farmer led pasture aeration study funded by SARE.

*****Please note: We will be visiting a working farm with livestock. Please bring clean and disinfected non-farm footwear to reduce risk of transmitting pathogens.

After the event, please clean and disinfect footwear before leaving the farm, or place your dirty footwear in a plastic bag or bucket, don street shoes, and clean/disinfect at home.

Protocol for cleaning footwear: Clean with soap and water first, removing all dirt, manure, etc. Then disinfect by using a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water). Need to have 10 minutes of contact for disinfection.*****
