Event description

Description

Quickly learn the basics of Hawaiian Applique in this fast-paced, one-day workshop. You'll gain hands-on experience cutting out a Hawaiian block, basting it, and learning needleturn applique. She will have several block patterns available for students to choose from. All skill levels welcome.

Awesome in their beauty and symmetry, Hawaiian quilts are surprisingly easy to make. Quickly learn the basics of Hawaiian appliqué in this fast-paced, one-day workshop. You’ll gain hands-on experience cutting out a Hawaiian block, basting it, and learning needleturn appliqué. I’ll have six different Hawaiian block patterns for you to choose from as your class project. Even though we work on a block in class, you will leave knowing what you need to appliqué a large Hawaiian quilt. This class is process-oriented, not product-oriented. All experience levels welcome.

Your class fee includes reserved seating at a trunk show with Nancy Lee Chong on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30pm, as well as lunch during class on Friday. We do have a refrigerator and microwave on site for you to use.

SUPPLY LIST-

Before coming to class, wash all fabrics to make sure they are pre-shrunk and colorfast

.  Two Contrasting Fabrics: Two 22-24" (or larger) square pieces, 100% cotton. (Need not be perfectly square.) • Both fabrics should be solid or nearly-solid colors. Choose two colors with strongly contrasting values. They may be a light and dark of the same color (i.e. green), or two different colors (i.e. ivory and dark blue).

 To complete this block as a quilt you will eventually need one 24” (or larger) square of fabric for the backing, 1/4 yard of the appliqué fabric for binding, batting, and quilting thread. You need not bring these to class.

 Practice fabrics: Two 12" square (approx) pieces of contrasting, solid-colored, 100% cotton fabric. These will be used to practice the needleturn techniques.

 REQUIRED: Milliners/Straw Needle* size 10 or 11 (any brand). I believe my needleturn techniques work so well because of this long, thin needle. Do not bring “Hand Appliqué” or “Sharps”, they are too short.

 Needle for basting: A long, sturdy needle, size 8 or 9, with a sharp point and good-sized eye for quick threading.

 Thread for appliqué: that matches the darker of your two practice fabrics. I prefer cotton Aurifil (50 weight); OK to bring what you like.

 Ugly thread: a color that contrasts with and looks awful on the appliqué fabric. You will be thread-basting, not using glue or fusible; a good opportunity to use up some of those odd spools with very little thread on them (no thread on old wooden spools). Important that you don’t like the color of thread on the appliqué fabric. I’ll explain.

 Thread snippers and paper scissors

 Fabric shears: good enough to cut through 8 layers of fabric. 8” Gingher shears*, or equivalent. Shears with metal handles tend to work better than ones with plastic handles.

 Straight pins: at least 150 pins. Some (approx 50) need to be strong enough to pin through 8 layers of fabric, the rest only need to pin through 2 layers of fabric.

 Masking tape: regular, whatever you have on hand. (Do NOT bring blue/painter’s tape.)

 Paper: 1 sheet, 8-1/2" x 11" – any paper you can see through to trace your pattern (copy or notebook paper).

 Pen or pencil & note paper: for taking notes.

 Optional items: reading glasses, thimble, needle threade, portable light.
