Description

For the second year, the Hawai‘i Island New Farmer and Rancher Expo brings together emerging producers with non-profit, private, and government resource organizations, as well as area buyers and experienced farmers.

The goal of the Expo is to provide participants with an understanding of all aspects involved in establishing a viable commercial farm business on Hawai‘i Island.

FRIDAY (12:30 to 8:30 p.m.): Speakers will present on various topics including land, financing, crop selection, labor issues, new farmer training programs, food safety, pest control, non-traditional farming methods, and many others. Also offered will be panel discussions and Q&A with experienced farmers and local buyers and information booths hosted by various local resources. Snacks and coffee service will be available throughout the day, with a catered networking dinner provided by Sweet Cane Café to be held at 6:30 p.m.

Community and resource groups such as The Kohala Center, Pacific Gateway Center, AgriLogic Consulting, Hāmākua Agricultural Cooperative, United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, Hawaii Department of Agriculture, University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Hawaii Agritourism Association, and many others will be on hand to discuss programs they offer to assist new and beginning farmers, as well as to answer your questions.

SATURDAY (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.): Farm tours will include on-site observation and discussion with local operations during the specified time frames only. Farm tours are not organized by the hosts, and travel and lunch is on your own. No refunds for cancellations. Registrants can sign up for one workshop in the morning and one in the afternoon. Specific location details will be provided at the Expo on Friday, August 10.

NOTE: Saturday Talks/Tours are dictated by participant numbers. The maximum number of participants is 20 per tour, so if you want a special talk/tour, best to register early. Minimum number of talk/tour participants is 3 per tour. If the minimum is not reached, the tour may be canceled.

Morning (9:30–11:30 a.m.)

  • North Kona: Aquaponics
    Ten different configuration and size aquaponics systems, KNF piggery, and KNF chicken coop. Also half-dozen, small-space gardening examples and an area of raised-bed gardens using KNF, JADAM, Huglekultur, and other approaches.

  • North Hilo: Korean Natural Farming Methods

  • Hāmākua: Affordable Land Leasing Programs

  • North Kohala: Orchard Farming

Afternoon (2–4 p.m.)

  • South Kona: Farming for Sustainable Ag (Seed Bank, Food Security)
    Demonstration gardens, individual community member plots, a fruit germplasm repository, Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers, a hala and wauke project, and an ‘ulu reforestation research project through UH CTAHR

  • North Hilo: Animal Husbandry/Piggeries

  • Hāmākua: Farmer Training Programs
    Farmer training program providing hands-on experience in producing crops along the Hāmākua Coast

  • Hāmākua: Ranching
    Farm specializing in heritage-breed Berkshire pigs on the Hāmākua Coast



ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and is open until August 8. Registration fee for Friday and Saturday - $50; Friday only - $35.

The event is sponsored by AgriLogic Consulting, Pacific Gateway Center, and The Kohala Center, with a grant provided by the USDA Risk Management Agency.
