Description

A Free, Day Long Workshop

You're comfortable coding in Python, C++ or Java, but you've never had time to delve into pure functional programming. In this workshop, you'll start from the ground up with a guided tour of Haskell's basic features. You'll create simple functions in Haskell and build your way to interesting, elegant functional coding solutions. You'll practice using an interactive IDE in which you share code with other participants.

Who should attend: People with little or no experience writing code in Haskell. Attendees should have some experience writing programs in other languages.

What you'll learn: We'll cover Haskell's function syntax, operations on lists, tuples, recursive definitions, data types, classes and instances, functors, applicatives, and monads.

What to bring: A laptop with the Haskell Platform installed. (Visit https://www.haskell.org/platform/ to download the platform.) And don't forget to bring a charger!

When: Saturday, June 22; 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Where: Microsoft Reactor, 11 Times Square, New York NY 10036. Please note: To maintain building security, attendees must register for the workshop on this page and also for the free New York :: Compose Unconference 2019.

About the instructor: Dr. Barry Burd is a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He's the author of several books and articles, including Java For Dummies and Java Programming for Android Application Developers For Dummies. He often writes Haskell code as a way of avoiding other, more pressing tasks.

This workshop is organized by the New York Haskell Users Group as part of the New York :: Compose 2019 conference and the New York :: Compose Unconference 2019.
