Event description

Description

Abolitionist. Activist. Spy. Visionary. The Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives (GRAAMA) will host film director Kasi Lemmons’s portrayal of Araminta Ross, better known as Harriet Tubman, on Saturday, November 2nd, 7pm at Celebration South. The biopic has been highly acclaimed by critics as a “monument to her [Harriet’s] heroism” and a “gripping story” with Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo starring in the lead role.

The iconic story of Tubman making 13 trips to free 70 slaves is well translated to screen with galvanizing performances from the entire cast. The wondrous musical backdrop is scored by jazz trumpeter, Terence Blanchard, who will, consequently, be playing live at the 2020 Grand Rapids Symphony's Celebration of Soul.

The Candied Yam has partnered with GRAAMA to provide offerings from their soul food menu to tie into the movie’s theme. Tickets are $25 per person online (not including the Eventbrite service charges) which includes both movie pass and soul food. In addition, there will be a silent auction, raffle, and give aways based on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Tickets may also be purchased for $25 directly from GRAAMA by calling George Bayard at 616.540.2943.
