Event description

Description

We are delighted to announce that the Harmonica Collective originally scheduled in November has now been rescheduled for Thursday, March 19th - Saturday, March 21st, 2020 at the same location, The Alley in Sanford, Florida. The stellar roster of expert guides remains the same -- Jason Ricci, Winslow Yerxa, Jerry Portnoy, James Conway, Catriona Sturton and Tom Halchak.

The Jason Ricci / Winslow Yerxa Harmonica Collective is geared toward the intermedate to advanced player, including professional musicians. However, if a beginner or novice player wishes to attend this world-class workshop, teaching assistance is available on the sidelines, regardless of skill level. This year we are happy to have Lauren Williams as a supporting instructor for any who need individual guidance.

If you are holding a ticket for the Collective originally scheduled for November, 2019, your ticket will be honored for the Collective in March of 2020. If you purchased a ticket for the November event which was then refunded, you are eligible for the March event at the discounted original price of $375 -- just contact Tom Watson via email to obtain the discount.

THE FACULTY::

Jason Ricci never fails to amaze his fans and students with his innovation, bringing new depths of expression to the harmonica through his virtuosic chops, his deeply studied use of effects, and his fearless songwriting subjects. His dozens of YouTube instructional videos illustrate his effectiveness as a teacher of both the techniques and the theory behind his music. Learn directly from this brilliant teacher and performer at the Harmonica Collective.

Jerry Portnoy is the real deal for old-school, authentic blues harp. He grew up on Maxwell Street, ground zero for Chicago blues, and played in the bands of blues legends Muddy Waters, Johnny Young, and Johnny Littlejohn before working with Duke Robillard and Eric Clapton. His blues pedigree is matched only by his teaching skills.

James Conway grew up in a deeply Irish Chicago family, playing harmonica, tin whistle, bodhran (hand drum) and guitar. He lights up the harmonica both in his amazing Irish playing and soulful blues playing – and mixes them in unexpected ways. Listening to him will inspire and excite you, while learning from him will open up a whole new world of ways to approach the harmonica.

Catriona Sturton teaches hundreds of beginning harmonica players every year and also some high-level pros in her native Canada. As a player, she infuses her music partly with her background as an indie rock bass player and partly with blues and folk in her original songwriting. She seamlessly integrates guitar, harmonica, and violin, and in her teaching focuses on confidence, relaxation, and delivering an effective performance.

Winslow Yerxa has the uncanny knack of seeing things inside-out and then explaining it in a way that makes sense, and using it to make head-turning music. Connected to all things harmonica worldwide, he can address nearly any question and will teach eye-opening approaches to music and the harmonica that will have you exploring fascinating universes you didn’t know existed.

Lauren Williams is a harmonica player and singer steeped in the Chicago blues style. She performs all over Florida with her band LC Williams and the Driver. Her husband Trent Souder is a fantastic guitar player, and will be with us to support the instructors when needed. Lauren will be on the sidelines throughout the Collective to tutor any attendees who need individual instruction, particularly any novice players who need assistance.

Tom Halchak is known throughout the harmonica world for his custom harmonicas, covers and combs as owner/master technician at BLUE MOON HARMONICAS. He creates high-end harps for many professional players, including Jason Ricci. He will present a workshops on maintenance, repair and customization, with hands-on demonstrations of techniques. He will also have Blue Moon products available for sale at the Collective.
