Event description

Description

The "Family Matters" gathering looks at problematic drug use from the perspectives of people who use(d) drugs and those who love them. On many panels, people in recovery or active users will share the conversation with their loved ones.

The event is co-sponsored with the family group Ohio CAN (Change Addiction Now). Panel discussions include:

  1. Mothers speak: “If I only knew then what I know now..."

  2. The intellectual journey from abstinence-only to embracing medication-assisted treatment.

  3. “What about the children?" Adult children talk about growing up with parents who used drugs/had substance user problems.

  4. Felon: The role of drug courts, jail, homicide prosecutions, criminal records and more.

  5. Subtle Distinctions: The difference between enabling, setting boundaries and tough love.

  6. Faith and Science: How a belief in God and in science should work together.

  7. Marijuana: Can it save lives?

  8. Advocacy: Turning pain into positive progress.

  9. What’s Next? The Future of Harm Reduction in Ohio and elsewhere.

  10. “Why I lie” …to doctors, to parents, to those I love, to myself.

  11. "Does it Get Better?" Relapse, recovery, trust.

  12. Kinship Families: Grandparents, extended family and loved ones raising the children of those who’ve died or suffered.

Tickets include food and a free naloxone kit. Venue is 30 minutes east of Columbus.
