HARD SWIMMIN' FISH

FACEBOOK // WEBSITE

Hard Swimmin’ Fish is an ensemble deeply rooted in the traditions of American music. Our down home roots sound pilfers from the best that early American music has to offer including blues, jazz, funk and swing, and churn it all up into a spicy brew that is familiar yet uniquely our own.

The musical influences and instrumentation of the band seamlessly combine tradition and modernity. Demian Lewis (guitar/vocals) and Waverly Milor (harmonica/vocals) are steeped in blues traditions of the American south. Conjuring the wails of Howlin’ Wolf, RL Burnside and Bukka White, they pen original compositions that harken to an old time blues show. Rooting the ensemble on upright and electric bass is Randy Ball whose unyielding pursuance of the groove has led him to study with luminaries Chuck Rainey and Victor Wooten. The rhythmic engine of the band is Jason Walker. His knowledge of musical traditions from Africa, its extension into the Caribbean, and their culmination in New Orleans in the American drum set, rumbles, growls and speaks in tongues through his cajon (box drum) based contraption set.

With over two decades of honing our sound Hard Swimmin’ Fish shows are an infectious, danceable, roots music throwdown. Grab your dancing shoes and a partner. We’ll see you on the dance floor!

BOBBY THOMPSON TRIO

FACEBOOK // WEBSITE

Hailed as one of Washington DC’s top blues musicians, Thompson strikes an energetic and seasoned balance between electric blues-rock, exemplified by his three studio albums and two live albums, along with a distinctive acoustic song-craft performance style. His acoustic emphasis on the Weissenborn lap-slide acoustic guitars sets him apart from many of his contemporaries but it’s not just his instrumental strengths that garner attention, but also his deep rootsy songwriting and dynamic vocal style.

Thompson’s 2018 ‘Retrospect’ album release exemplifies his studio and road-tested career and shows the depth of his writing and recording history. This album covers works from 2007 to 2017, from regional radio hits like ‘Good Things That We Have’ and ‘Came To See You’. along with his acoustic writing style with cuts like ‘Busy Avenue’ and ‘On the Ground’. Thompson’s entire career span began in the 1990s, touring throughout the decades and culminating in a solo career that has seen him lead his own group, touring internationally, and continue writing and recording. His commitment to the highest level of performance creates remarkable concerts that enthrall audiences wherever he performs.

Thompson won the 2018 Washington Area Music Association Award (The Wammies) for Best Blues Album, and his songs are in regular rotation on radio stations in Washington and beyond. His trio performed at the 2015 Montreal Jazz Festival and he has recently provided acoustic support for blues legend Jimmie Vaughan on numerous occasions. His electric band has opened for Marcus King, Toronzo Cannon, Carolyn Wonderland, to name a few, and has toured internationally with various groups. He has also performed with Grammy-winning reggae group SOJA and with Junior Marvin, of the legendary Wailers.
