From the moment that Abel offered in sacrifice the firstborn of his flock, God’s favor entered the world: The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering (Gn 4:4). “Favor” is demonstrated delight…tangible evidence we have the approval of God. It’s something we crave. The Psalmist cries out to the Lord: Give me a sign of your favor! (Ps 86:17). That sign comes at the Baptism of the Lord when a voice from the heavens proclaims: This is my beloved Son on whom my favor rests (Mt 3:17). Jesus takes full advantage of that favor to convince us of how much we are favored: God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). And once we realize that we are blessed with God’s favor, like Jesus, we want to use it to benefit the needy, the suffering, those who are hurting. Even more, favor causes the community to come together like never before because they recognize just how important they are: God loves us because He is good—not because we are. God gives his favor even to the lowliest. The gift of divine favor ignites in us compassion and generosity of spirit—the fruit of hearts bursting with gratefulness. We are convinced that what God says to the Blessed Virgin Mary he also means for us: You have found favor with God (Lk 1:30).
