Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization in Sacramento, California dedicated to helping abandoned or abused cats and dogs find future homes or safe sanctuary using a no-kill philosophy. (Due to space limitations our pet sanctuary is limited to cats, dogs are kept in foster care until adoption).

Junior Program (Ages 12-17)

Junior Volunteers help with a number of important duties including clean-up, basic grooming, animal socialization and assisting adult volunteers.

How to Get Started

The first step is to attend Junior Volunteer Orientation. The meeting lasts 45 minutes and sessions are held twice a month. You only need to attend one session. 

Orientation Requirements

Parent(s) or a legal guardian must attend orientation with junior and are the only persons authorized to sign up and attend with junior. At the meeting an application is required to be signed by the parent(s) or guardian.

Community Service

Due to the popularity of our Junior Program and limited shift availability, we cannot guarantee to meet your school’s community service requirements.

FAQs

Is there a dress code? Yes. Please dress appropriately and comfortably as we are open to the general public.

Volunteer Dress Code:

  • Shorts or skirts can be no higher than midpoint, between knee and hip.
  • Midriffs, strapless, halter or backless tops are prohibited. This includes a sports bra worn as a primary article of clothing.
  • Undergarments, including straps that show, are out of dress code.
  • Pants may not be two inches larger in waist that the normal waist size. If the pants cannot stay up without a belt, they are considered inappropriate. No undergarments may be seen.

What are my parking options? We have free parking in our own and in the neighboring business' parking lots.

Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary

No Kill, Volunteer Run, Cage Free

Founded in 1993, Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary is a no-kill animal rescue group dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of homeless and abused animals throughout the Sacramento area. Needy cats and dogs are rescued, nurtured, and provided shelter and medical care (including spaying and neutering) before being placed in safe, loving, permanent homes. After adoption, Happy Tails animals may be returned at any time, no questions asked.

Adult cats (one year and older) are up for adoption at the Happy Tails “Patricia L. Holmes Adoption Center” located at 6001 Folsom Blvd. in East Sacramento. Additional cats plus kittens and dogs are cared for in our network of foster homes and are put up for adoption on the weekends at the PetSmart store near the corner of Watt Avenue and Arden Way.

As an almost all-volunteer organization, Happy Tails is grateful for the work of over 200 dedicated volunteers. Assistance programs help the pets of elderly, homeless and low-income individuals. Through our extensive feral cat program, Happy Tails maintains several altered, healthy feral cat colonies. This effort is one more step in helping to solve the Sacramento area’s serious pet overpopulation problem. Funding includes monetary donations from our dedicated and generous benefactors, as well as grants, bequests, fundraising events and adoption fees. Federal and state tax authorities recognize Happy Tails as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation.
