Happy Hour for Sad People: an Unconventional Grief Circle

By Juniper Wong

Overview

A grief circle at a bar. Grounded Grief x Advice Booth's first monthly grief circle. December's theme: Unhappy Holidays

The holidays suck for a lot of people.

A lot of us are holding a ton of grief in 2025 - personal & collective.

The holidays can be even harder because we’re expected to socialize & feel warm + bright. We don't think anyone can handle us *sobbing* over the cranberry sauce.

But this expectation of manufactured joy can highlight everything we’re missing. Everything we've loved and lost.

But just because we’re sad...doesn't mean we don’t want to be invited to the party.

Most of us who are grieving don’t want to *just* grieve. We *also* want to love. We *also* want to laugh. We *also* want to create. We want to talk about our intense emotions and talk about the stupid show we watched on TV today.

We yearn for a space where grief can float in and out - where tears are welcome amidst celebration & joy. Because grief is love in motion. If grief is love with nowhere to go, then we need to make a new space for our grief + love to go. To move. To experience life in a new way.

Introducing...the Grounded Grief X Advice Booth grief circle.

A different kind of grief circle at a bar.

Because grief doesn’t just need a special “sanctuary” or private room.

Grief belongs everywhere because every human experience is full of grief. Grief belongs at the party too. Even if it’s crying in the corner, it belongs in the midst of love and laughter because it wouldn't exist without those things.

What can you expect?

  • Grief themed games designed to help us laugh and move through our grief without drowning in it (think BINGO for Sh*t People Say when You're Grieving, Mad Libs, & We’re Not Really Strangers style prompts)
  • Special grief themed cocktail + mocktails cooked up by the rad owners of Advice Booth
  • A community of people who figuring out how to keep loving even in the face of tremendous loss. Whether you're grieving the loss of a loved one, a relationship, an identity, or a dream we're here for you.
  • Zero pressure to share anything you don’t want to share. You can go as deep or stay as shallow as you want.
  • A space where you can grieve howevhowever you need to grieve - there isn’t one “right” way.
  • A licensed therapist led space that’s facilitated expertly - you don’t have to worry about one person dominating the space the entire time. and where you leave feeling a little more supported & uplifted, not depressed.
