Event description

Description

Join retired OSU Assistant Dean Jim Tootle for a fascinating look into the life of Columbus sports legend Hank Gowdy. Co-Hosted by the Hank Gowdy Chapter, Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

In the prime of his successful baseball career, the hero of the 1914 World Series became the first Major League player to volunteer for military service when the U.S. entered World War I in 1917. Dr. Tootle will share stories of Gowdy’s decision to enlist, his combat service in France, his return to his baseball career as a player and coach after the war, and his remarkable re-enlistment at age 52 when the U.S. entered World War II, becoming the only Major Leaguer to serve in both World Wars.

The event is free but registration is required.
