Event description

Description

Are you ready for our big come-back from our summer break? October will feature performance poets Sally Jenkinson and Katie Gill. Come along for your chance to compete in the Hammer and Tongue slam, where one lucky winner will be going home with a ticket to the regional final in December and a chance to appear in the national finals in 2018.

The rules for the slam are simple. There are 8 places for eight poets to take part. Each poet has 3 minutes to impress a panel of 5 judges, selected at random from the evening's audience. Judges score each performance out of 10. Highest score is deducted, lowest score is deducted, and the total of the three remaining scores is the score the poet gets. No props allowed. Time penalty if you go over time.

You want more info on our special guests? Well...

Sally Jenkinson is a poet, writer and performer, based in the Forest of Dean (and before that, Brighton, and before that, Bristol). But she grew up in Doncaster (South Yorkshire), where they say poem like this: ‘poym’.

Sally mostly writes poetry and theatre, usually for live performance, but also for the page. Her second short collection of poems, ‘Boys’ was published in May 2016 by Burning Eye Books. Sally runs poetry and creative writing workshops for every kind of person, and also facilitates sensory workshops for people with PMLD (profound and multiple learning disabilites).

Sally was awarded Bristol Poetry Festival’s 2013 Poet of the Year award.

Katie Gill is a part-time poet, full-time geezer. Katie is from Portsmouth and studied at Queen Mary's University London. To watch her performances, go to: https://goo.gl/e34pnf
