Event description

Description

Join Hallways and other middle and high school parents from across the Independent School community for two important parent workshops in May.

These two parent workshops allow for a deeper dive into understanding the challenges of adolescence and the important role that social emotional health plays in our children’s futures. Our mix of research and personal reflection allow parents to put key concepts into practice and walk away with new tools and approaches that can be implemented immediately.

Light refreshments will be served at each workshop.

Workshop 1: Challenging Perfectionism & Reimagining Success

Thursday, May 9th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Perfectionism is on the rise among adolescents. What does this mean for independent school students and how can we work to encourage a growth mindset in our children? In our first workshop, we will explore the latest research on perfectionism, discuss what it can look like in our day-to-day lives, and assess how it impacts adolescents’ mental and emotional health during this critical period of development. Together, we will examine traditional ideas of success and achievement and what values they communicate to our children. Hallways will share strategies that parents can use to challenge perfectionistic thinking and behaviors and provide opportunities to put these skills into practice through personal reflection and small group conversations.

Workshop 2: Coping with Challenges: Promoting Healthy Habits at Home

Thursday, May 23rd from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

As Independent School parents, we spend a lot of time thinking about the success of our children. How important is social and emotional learning (SEL) in the success equation? In our second workshop, we will review key components of social and emotional health, giving special attention to the important role coping skills play in promoting health and well-being now and in the future. Together we will examine current patterns of coping we notice in our children, consider stressors and pressures our children might be experiencing, and review key strategies parents can use to instill healthy coping skills in their children in order to increase their capacity for responding to challenges and making healthy choices. Through reflection and small group conversations, parents will have an opportunity to consider how to incorporate social and emotional skill building at home.
