FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Passing the Torch?
Passing the Torch is GLSEN NoVA's annual event honoring local student leaders and Gay-Straight Alliances doing amazing things to make their schools safer for all students. During the ceremony, graduating seniors pass a candle down to students at their schools remaining in the GSA. The event is catered and is our most formal event of the year. A prom follows the ceremony. It is DJed by the best DJ out there, Zack Sanders!
What if I'm new or not part of my school's GSA?
That's perfectly fine! You will still get a candle and you can be involved however much you choose. This event is for absolutely everyone!
What is the dress code?
Dress in whatever you feel comfortable! Many people dress in more formal clothes because this event is a prom. Jeans or a suit, you are welcome!
Can my parent or GSA adviser attend?
Yes they can! We strongly encourage parents and advisers to attend. They are included as part of the ceremony and dinner. There will also be a lounge for them available during the prom.
Do I need a ticket for the event?
Yes. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased here: http://northernvirginia.glsen.org/event. We charge for this event to cover the costs of catering and other materials for the event. 2012-2013 GLSEN NoVA Jump-Start Student Leadership Team members are required to get tickets and may do so by using an access code provided to them by David Aponte. If you cannot pay for this event, you are still welcome! Please make sure you e-mail daponte@glsennorthernvirginia.org and indicate that you need financial assistance. We do not turn anyone away if they cannot pay!
Will tickets be available at the door?
Yes, but it is strongly encouraged that you buy tickets ahead of time.
Do I need to register for the event?
100% YES! We need to know how much food to order and if you do not register, we can't guarantee you a plate! Please register as soon as possible. This can also be done from the page mentioned earlier: http://northernvirginia.glsen.org/event.
