About this Event

Halau i Ka Pono - The Hula School of Chicago is proud to present its 10th Anniversary Hula Performance with special guest Jason Poole joining us from Allentown, PA. Kumu Hula June Kaililani Tanoue began by teaching hula classes from her home in Oak Park in May 2004. She formally opened Halau i Ka Pono in September 2009 with a performance that Jason Poole was at.

Here's a slide show of Jason Poole and his visits to Chicago over the ten years.

Halau i Ka Pono has grown to include children from age 5 and up to kupuna (elders) who are in their 80's. Men are also part of the Halau. The aloha spirit or the foundational practice of compassion pervades the hula school.

Kumu June went through traditional ʻuniki ritual and graduated as ‘Olapa (Dancer) in 1994, ‘Olapa/Ho’opa’a (Dancer/Keeper of the Chants) in 1996 and Kumu Hula (Master Teacher) in June 2000. Her teacher is Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang of Halau Hula Ka No'eay.

Halau i Ka Pono is a program of the Zen Life & Meditation Center, Chicago in Oak Park.
