The Hāfu2Hāfu project was started by Netherlands-based Japanese-Belgian photographer Tetsuro Miyazaki to explore a growing global community of hāfu - people with one Japanese parent.
Miyazaki aimed to photograph a mixed-Japanese person from every UN-recognised country, producing a series of over 100 black and white portraits, each accompanied by a question that the portrayed person poses directly to the viewer.
Themes of mixed-Japanese identity may resonate particularly with people from this background, or from a mixed East/Southeast Asian background, or another mixed ethnicity. It may also resonate with people who are parents of mixed ethnicity children, and/or their friends and allies.
After exhibitions in Japan, Europe, and the US, we’re so excited to be bringing this exhibition to the UK for the first time, at The Casbah in the heart of London’s West End.
The exhibition will be open for a limited time only, from Friday, 17 October to Thursday, 30 October.
Opening Event
Join us for the grand opening of Hāfu2Hāfu x Multippl on Thursday, 16 October, 6:30 pm -10:00 pm.
Photographer Tetsuro Miyazaki will speak about the project and his work, and join a panel discussion that explores mixed ethnicity and multiculturalism through the lens of the arts.
Panel Discussion
Following Miyazaki's talk, we will be joined by special guests (announced shortly) for a panel discussion and Q&A.
Questions posed by the individuals photographed in the exhibition will serve as the focus of the discussion, and panellists will explore mixed ethnicity in a multicultural world and discuss the importance of diversity and representation.
Following the panel discussion, there will be time to chat with fellow attendees and entertainment (more to follow!)
We cannot wait to see you all at the Hāfu2Hāfu x Multippl: Photography Exhibition on Mixed-Identity Opening Event!
Much Love, Multippl team
