ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Who’s Harlem? / Whose Harlem? examines “multi-local” identity. Inspired by writer Taiye Selasi’s 2014 TED Talk titled: “Don't ask where I'm from, ask where I'm a local,” this exhibition aims to explore the various ways HAF2016 visual artists experience Harlem as a creative incubator and how their sense of “Home” is shaped by the community, often while remaining connected to other places. This show also seeks to question how social influences like race, class, gender and sexuality, gentrification, policing and more, determine what it means to be from Harlem and to whom the neighborhood “belongs.”
