The City of Mount Pearl is hosting a hackathon to bring together individuals with an interest in solving community challenges. Join us!

About this Event

We like to think of ourselves as the Smartest Little City in Canada, and we’re working hard to prove it. We are looking at our City with a new lens, exploring how technology can improve how we operate, and most importantly the value we bring to our residents and businesses. And we want YOUR help!

Hacking Mount Pearl is a 3-day event that will bring together entrepreneurs, business professionals, designers, developers, innovators, and anyone with a keen interest in designing for the future.

Participants will have the opportunity to pitch ideas, form teams, get advice from experts and build a solution – all in one weekend. Teams will present their finished products in front of a panel of judges for a chance to win great prizes!

Join us on November 1-3, 2019 at the Reid Community Centre to help solve issues for our communities! We’ll keep you fueled, fed, and entertained while you work your way towards winning some MAJOR prizes.

HOW TO HACK

Hacking Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador’s first municipal focused Hackathon, is a weekend-long event aimed at driving innovation and encouraging creative solutions to community challenges. Never been to a hackathon before? Not sure what it is?

Hacking is a process that brings people from various backgrounds and disciplines together to use technology and innovation to transform ideas into reality. Teams immerse themselves in developing solutions and building prototypes for the identified challenges and opportunities. Others, such as mentors and technical experts, can offer their guidance to teams throughout the weekend.

The event culminates with a judging panel selecting the winning prototypes based on team presentations on the final day of the event. Prototypes demonstrate how a solution would work for the community and how the prototype can be further developed and brought to market.

WHO CAN HACK

We welcome everyone and anyone to participate - entrepreneurs, students, business professionals, residents, community leaders, collaborators, marketers, technologists, creatives, designers, developers, innovators, or anyone with a keen interest in designing for the future. You have a place here!

All Hackers will receive the following:

  • Food and drinks
  • An awesome Hackathon t-shirt
  • A fun experience with peers and creative entrepreneurs
  • Hands-on experience in problem-solving, creative thinking, and (of course) programming
  • A chance to win great prizes

PRIZES

First place:

  • $7,500 cash
  • $10,000 in operating capital (to complete product/solution)
  • 2 seats in the A1Next incubator for 12 months
  • 12-month Summit Centre membership (per participant)

Second place:

  • $3,500 cash
  • $5,000 in operating capital (to complete the product/solution)

Third place: $2,000 cash

Community Spirit: $1,000 cash

CHALLENGES

Participants will have two options for hacking - you can recommend a challenge at the Hackathon (before hacking begins) or you can develop a solution to one of the following four challenges:

  1. Resident Notices: How can technology help the City improve and streamline resident communication?
  2. Recycling Rates: How can technology help us improve recycling rates?
  3. Climate Change: What can the City do, using technology, to help us reduce energy consumption and reduce our carbon footprint?
  4. Funding Frustration: How can the City improve the process of finding, applying, and reporting on funding opportunities?

Further details will be released prior to the beginning of hacking.

Friday, November 1:

6:00 pm - 6:30 pm: Sign-in

6:15 pm – 6:30 pm: Pitch clinic

6:45 pm – 7:30 pm: Kick-off

7:30 pm – 8:30 pm: Problem pitches/team formation

8:30 pm – 10:00 pm: Opening social (Reid Community Centre)

Saturday, November 2:

8:00 am – 9:00 am: Breakfast

8:30 am: HACKING BEGINS

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Pitch Clinic

5:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Dinner

All night: HACKING CONTINUES

Sunday, November 3:

8:00 am – 9:00 am: Breakfast

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm: Presentations

3:00 pm: Winners announced and closing remarks

LOGISTICS

Bring your own devices:

Hacking Mount Pearl participants are expected to bring any devices they require for their projects. This includes laptops (with necessary software), accessories, smartphones, etc. Extension cords and power bars will be provided.

Parking:

FREE parking is available at the Reid Centre/Summit Centre parking lot.

Shuttles:

FREE shuttles will be available from MUN University Centre. Shuttle service may be arranged from other areas of the province upon request.

Navigating to the Reid Centre:

Hacking will happen at the Reid Center gym. The entrance to the Reid Centre is located on the south side of the Summit Centre, visible from Smallwood Drive.

FAQs

What if I've never been to a hackathon before?

Welcome! Participants of all skill levels will be there. We’ll have mentors and staff to help you with your project. Hackathons can be a great place to learn new skills in a short amount of time! Just be eager to learn, and excited to meet lots of awesome people.

Who can participate?

Do I need to know how to code?

Nope! If you’re a visionary, marketer, designer, salesperson or business student, your design and pitching skills will be very valuable!

Can I work on my hack before the event?

No. To maintain competition integrity and fairness, all work on your hack must be done at the event. All projects with prior work done will be eliminated from judging. However, you are encouraged to touch up on your skills or bring any hardware in preparation for the event!

What is the minimum age for participants?

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Do I register as an individual or as a team?

Participants will need to register as individuals, not teams. Participants will form project teams at the Reid Community Center on Friday evening. If you already have a team in mind, just form your team upon arrival (everyone must register individually prior to arriving).

How many people are on a team?

Up to 5 people per team.
