Event description
HackIN is happy to announce its very first annual reverse engineering hackathon!

About this Event

Challenge: At HackIN, you play the role of a security researcher on an elite team providing cyber incident response services to Indiana’s top companies. When one of your most high-profile clients discovers and recovers a mysterious device on their grounds, you and your team are called upon to build a replica, determine the device’s true nature, and respond to any malicious discoveries. It’s a race against time with the threat of corporate espionage looming as your client prepares for a major product release – are you up for the challenge?

Details: Meet, collaborate, and win monetary prizes with other engineers, scientists, and hackers in hacking interesting hardware challenges over a short two-day period. The event will also include mentorship opportunities, free food throughout the day, and opportunities to learn more about the U.S. Navy.

Prizes: 1st place ($4000), 2nd place ($2000), 3rd place ($1000)

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an intense event where engineers and programmers come together over a weekend to identify issues and create software and, sometimes, hardware solutions.

Who can join this hackathon?

We encourage juniors and seniors in college with engineering backgrounds to join this hackathon. You must be 18 years of age or older by November 8th to participate in this event.

When is the deadline to register?

We encourage you to register as early as possible, as registrations will be accepted in the order in which they are submitted based on suitability until event capacity has been reached. The final deadline to register is 9AM EST on November 9th, 2019.

Do I need to form teams before signing up for this hackathon?

Not necessarily! You will have the opportunity to meet people at the event (Friday Social Night and/or Saturday morning) to form teams, and we will help facilitate a team for all participants. We highly encourage you to form teams with people you've never met!

What do I bring?

Bring your own laptop, phone, chargers, and anything else you need to feel comfortable.

What should I do to prepare?

Prior to the event (no later than October 25, 2019), we will provide read-ahead materials as well as a list of recommended software. We strongly encourage teams to come prepared with the recommended software in advance of the event to make the most of the time available for solving challenges.

Will food be provided?

Yes! Hors d’oeuvres will be provided during the social on Friday night. We will also provide breakfast and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday.

What is the dress code?

Dress code is casual – t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers are encouraged! Attendees will include industry and military leaders from the community, and students. Please do not wear flip flops, tank tops, or shorts.

What skills do I need to have?

We expect the most successful teams to have a combination of skills in hardware analysis (understanding components, schematics, interconnections, functionality), hardware development (connecting and troubleshooting components following a schematic), software analysis (determining memory maps, extracting and analyzing binaries), software development (compiling/modifying firmware and memory banks), and basic familiarity with the Linux OS (installing software, basic command line). We encourage participants to team with peers with complementary skills for the best team composition.

Will there be educational/training opportunities?

We do not have a formal educational/training track for this event – only a competitive track will be offered. However, there is still a lot of potential to learn at this event! We will have keynote speakers provide their perspectives on cybersecurity challenges within the industry, as well as opportunities to network with your peers, industry experts, and industry and leaders. Additionally, during the competition, industry experts will be engaged with the teams to review their solutions, provide feedback, and move teams through any blocking challenges (with points for that challenge waived).

What can I expect to gain from this event?

All participants can expect opportunities to network with their peers, industry experts, and industry leaders, as well as gain insights into cybersecurity challenges in industry and hardware/firmware reverse engineering techniques. The most competitive teams will also walk away with monetary prizes!

How will the winners be determined?

Challenges will be scored by judges. See the Terms & Conditions presented during online registration for additional details on the judging process.
