About this event
Join us for a special Habitat Restoration event hosted in collaboration with Gay for Good, the California Native Plant Society, and the San Fernando Valley Audubon Socieity.
This month we celebrate the Harvey Milk Day of Service and Pride. Harvey Milk, was a visionary civil and human rights leader who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk’s unprecedented loud and unapologetic proclamation of his authenticity as an openly gay candidate for public office, and his subsequent election gave never before experienced hope to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people everywhere at a time when the community was encountering widespread hostility and discrimination. His remarkable career was tragically cut short when he was assassinated nearly a year after taking office (source, Harvey Milk Foundation).
Gay For Good, G4G, is an LGBTQ+ national volunteer service organization that started in LA in 2008. With 17 chapters across the country and growing, G4G is open to everyone and supports social and environmental welfare projects in many different communities. Past LA projects and partners have included: LAUSD, Tree People, FoLAR, LA Food Bank, LA Rec & Parks, LA Zoo, the LA Mayor's office, Downtown Women's Center, Heal the Bay and many others.
G4G has also worked closely with the City of LA since 2010 on Harvey Milk Day of Service projects. As Harvey Milk Day is officially recognized by the state of California, G4G organizes various school, garden and community projects in support. Past partners have included the LA Mayor's office, LAUSD, Enrich LA and the Milk Foundation. G4G is excited to join forces with FoLAR for this year's Harvey Milk Day 2022. https://gayforgood.org/
