Why does Habitat for Humanity of Marion County host this event? Habitat hosts is signature fundraising event to bring awareness about our mission and to raise enough funds to build a Habitat home for a low-income family. Families who qualify must complete 500 sweat equity hours, pay a down payment and attend all the required training classes on budgeting, finance, minor repairs, and any topic for home owners. Our homes are built by volunteers which keeps the costs down and the families have an affordable mortgage with zero percent interest loan from Habitat. 100% of the proceeds from this event goes towards the construction of a Habitat home which is called the “Strawberry House”. Only sponsors and the family get to Raise the Walls on the home and write inspirational messages on the 2x4 boards for the exterior walls.

Myth: Habitat gives home away – This is not correct – all families must complete their sweat equity, training classes and have their down payment at closing time. The mortgage is affordable for the family. Habitat is the bank for the loan.
