Event description

Description

“If you’re concerned, just talk to a member of our staff or, alternatively, swing your legs over the edge of the bed and walk out, remembering to pull the camera from your bum before leaving the hospital.”

Liz has got an embarrassing problem and these yogurts aren’t helping. Her body’s acting up. In a bold new show, which enjoyed a sell-out run at HOME Manchester, The Conker Group present this shameless tale of love, laughter and lavatories.

Inviting you on a journey of frank confessions, colourful characters and too much brown sauce, Gutted is based on solo performer Liz Richardson’s real life experiences as a twenty-something living with Ulcerative Colitis (similar to Crohn’s).

This bespoke tour across England will see the team taking the show to a number of hospitals, St Marks' being one of them! Following a tried-and-tested model, co-creators Liz and Tara Robinson will share the show (60 mins) and then invite audience members to share a cup of tea with them, and, if they want, openly engage in conversation with each other.

Here's what people have been saying...

"Gutted gives an accurate impression of the debilitating effects of a disease that could too easily become just a punchline about lavatory humour, and, being refreshingly free of self-pity, is surprisingly uplifting" Manchester Theatre Awards

"I cannot accept this stoma and I don't think I ever will. I cannot and will not discuss it with my husband so this show is very very helpful for us both." Patient

"I found it very moving- I am a mother of a patient and it gave me a new way to communicate to my daughter and took away the fear" Carer

"UC is a serious condition but the story was given with humour (I never thought anyone would be able laugh about UC but I did along with the audience) and pathos (there were parts when I felt a tear forming)". Mr T Tetlow, B.Sc., M.Sc., Dip.CB., FRCPath, Consultant Clinical Scientist

"It may seem a contradiction to describe a solo performance as a dialogue but Gutted is precisely that: an invitation to talk... it is to be applauded for promoting this particular conversation in a life-affirming way" - The Lancet

This tour is supported by The Wellcome Trust People's Award, and is made possible by the support and partnership of IA: the ileostomy & internal pouch Support Group. The show was originally also supported by Arts Council England and HOME Manchester. For more information on the tour locations and dates, click HERE.

Directions: Please note the 'Education Centre' is a stand-alone building near Rookwood Avenue at the back of the hospital. Follow signs from either of the main entrances.
