NESACS Honors the 2018 Gustavus John Esselen Awardee, Professor Jennifer A. Doudna, Followed by the Presentation of the Esselen Award and the Esselen Address

This meeting will feature Jennifer A. Doudna, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator; Li Ka-Shing Chancellor’s Chair in Biomedical and Health Sciences, Professor, Departments of Molecular & Cell Biology and Chemistry at UC Berkeley as our speaker and awardee. She will receive the Gustavus J. Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest for her work on the ground breaking Crispr process utilizing the Cas9 enzyme to splice DNA with pinpoint reliability, allowing precise editing of the genome. This has been recognized universally as a watershed moment in science.


The title of Professor Doudna's talk will be:

NESACS would like to thank the chair of the Gustavus John Esselen Award Committee of NESACS, Professor Karen Allen (BU), the Esselen Family, and Ms. Jeananne Piper Grady and Ms. Anna Singer for their skillful organization of, arrangements for, and invitations to, this event.

Registration is required and a ticket will be necessary for admission to the networking reception, dinner and the award meeting. The closest MBTA closest stop is Harvard Square. After dinner at the Charles hotel the award will be presented in the Mallinckrodt building at 12 Oxford Street.

Limited Free Parking available in the Garage at 52 Oxford St. Identify yourself as attending the Esselen/Harvard Chemistry event and the guard will direct you.

Parking is also available at the Charles Hotel: For arrival after 5:00PM, self-parking is $10; valet is $15.

There is street parking around Harvard Square, but the 2 hour time limit might not be enough for the dinner or the meeting.

Please note the social Hour, and Dinner will be held at the Charles Hotel, 3 Bennett Street. The Esselen Award address and talk will be held at 12 Oxford Street, in the Mallinckrodt building (approximately 1/2 mile, 8-10 minute walk between the two locations). Please let us know if you are unable to make transportation arrangements or if you need suggestions or directions.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Please use the Red Line and exit at Brattle Square. Charles Hotel is located at One Bennett Street, and importantly, the Esslen Award Ceremony and Presentation will be in Mallinckrodt Building located at 12 Oxford Street in the Chemistry Department.
