About this event

Hi friends and fans,

Real talk—this was an incredibly difficult show to produce. After nearly two years of motionless solitude, inspiration didn’t come easily. Making this show has been eye-opening in a magnitude of ways, from the emotional hurdles to the physical shock our bodies are going through. Yet all that aside, you’re here, in the audience, and that alone brings a sense of worth and joy and success to this work that fills me with an immense amount of hope and excitement not only for Motel Montana, but for the future.

So let’s talk about this show. I wanted to create something we all need right now. We all need a pop of color with a handful of glitter and the highest of heels. We need to laugh and let go, have a drink, and take in something beautiful. That to me is the essence of queerness. And when I think of where my queerness comes from it all leads back to one man, Richard, my grandfather.

Richard ran hotels in the 1950s. He was a closeted gay man. He married and had children and had partners on the side. This entire production reflects this—his conflicts, his experiences, and his coming to terms with himself (which he never was able to do). Each piece depicts his development. Sometimes directly, sometimes through side characters revealing aspects of life and the difficulties of the duality he experienced. Throughout this process, I learned that in therapy for their relationship, my grandmother was advised to “wear more revealing clothing” to keep Richard on track. I thought to myself, “Woah, what an incredibly f@#*ed up idea. That’s where the show will start.”

Motel Montana is designed to celebrate everything my grandfather couldn’t express in his life, and in turn, everything I am so unapologetically eager to express now. There’s something incredibly conflicting about celebrating the idea of my grandfather living out his truths, knowing I wouldn’t have been born had he done so.

Nonetheless, it’s a story that deserves to be told. This show is for him, and for all of us living in the greyscale of such a black & white world.
