Event description
Join Sonoma Land Trust outings guide Corby Hines for a virtual hike up Pole Mountain!

About this event

Join us for an interactive, guided, virtual nature experience of Pole Mountain. We’ll “hike” up the north side of Pole Mountain, reach the 2,204-foot summit for amazing 360-degree views, and then traverse the southern slopes ending on the coastal bluffs of the Jenner Headlands.

From the top of the highest peak along the Sonoma Coast are unobstructed, 360-degree views of Sonoma County and beyond. Pole Mountain, situated between Jenner and Cazadero, stands above a blanket of ridges and presents crystal-clear views in all directions — the Pacific Ocean in the west, exquisite views of the Cedars and Wine Country in the east, Mendocino County’s snow-capped mountains to the north (in the winter) and, on especially clear days, Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo to the south.

Sonoma Land Trust’s 238-acre iconic Pole Mountain Preserve, protected in partnership with Sonoma Ag + Open Space and other funding partners, towers above the ocean at 2,204 feet. It is uniquely situated between two other open space preserves: the Land Trust’s Little Black Mountain Preserve and the Jenner Headlands Preserve, acquired by Sonoma Land Trust, Sonoma County Ag + Open Space and other conservation partners in 2009 and donated to The Wildlands Conservancy in 2013. These three preserves create a vast landscape from sea level and beyond the Pole Mountain summit, connecting more than 6,300 acres of wildland that has been protected forever as a recreational corridor for the hardiest of hikers and a refuge for plants and wildlife to adapt to a changing climate.

A conservation project of this magnitude enables natural and cultural resource protection and stewardship on a landscape scale, including the opportunity to enhance Coho and steelhead fishery habitat and terrestrial species habitat, and provide variability for adapting to the effects of climate change. Acquisition of Pole Mountain also prevented residential and vineyard development at this significant resource property and created a forever home for the Pole Mountain Fire Lookout.

There is no charge for this event, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
