Event description

Description

The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) and Tijuana River Valley comprise the largest intact coastal wetland system in Southern California. Unlike most other coastal ecosystems in the region, it has contiguous beach, dune, salt marsh, riparian, and upland habitats. Given this, the Tijuana River Valley has been the focus of major conservation, restoration, research, and monitoring efforts over the last three decades.

This guided tour will take attendees by van along the international border and through a diversity of coastal habitats within the Reserve. At various stops, participants will:

  • See locations where the Tijuana River crosses the international border
  • Discuss ecological conservation efforts, including bi-national collaboration to control polluted storm water run-off
  • Visit the site of a sediment and marine debris catchment basin located in Border Field State Park
  • View art and park infrastructure constructed from marine debris recovered from the Tijuana River
  • Experience the southwestern corner of the continental United States

Participants will be picked up by van at 3:45pm at the loading area in front of the lobby at the 6IMDC conference location - Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa,1775 East Mission Bay Drive, San Diego, CA, USA 92109. The Tijuana River Valley is roughly 30 miles south of downtown San Diego, on the international border. The tour will include several stops within the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, in which participants will exit the van and walk short distances to points of interest. Participants will be dropped off at the 6IMDC conference location at 7pm.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for dirt surface and un-even terrain. Drinks and light snacks will be provided. The tour will be canceled in event of significant rain storm.
