Description

Parking: FREE! Rangers patrol the parking area on a regular basis.

Event Info: Let’s hike another great trail on the Hillsborough County Parks Inaugural Hiking Spree, as we join them for a 3.0 mile guided hike on the Yellow and Red trails. We will meet at the walk-in gate kiosk at the main parking lot. WARNING: Trail conditions are usually dry this time of year. However the area is very sunny, and there is only 1 portable toilet at the nearby ranger station. Hikers are encouraged to properly prepare with sturdy shoes, hats, glasses, bug spray, sunscreen, and their own water bottle. BRING EXTRA WATER to be safe, as we may will explore the adjoining Red trail as well.

Hiking Spree Info: HCFLGov.net/HikingSpree. Participants have until March 31st to complete 8 hikes on designated trails in order to earn their annual hiking shield medallion.

Park Info: The Lower Green Swamp Nature Preserve is a 12,800-acre tract located at the northeast corner of Hillsborough County. Formerly known as Cone Ranch and Audubon Ranch, the property was managed by the County’s Public Utilities Water Department from 1988 to 2010, when it was transferred as part of the County's Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP). The majority of this property has been managed with a cattle lease since 1992. In 2013, approximately 3,000 acres were opened for public access on hiking and equestrian trails. Over the next 20 years, the cattle lease area will be decreased as native longleaf pine habitat is restored.
