About this event

As a part of the museum's ongoing Cool History summer programming, we're hosting a special guest lecture series. These events are free and open to the public. All of the lectures will take place at the National Civil War Naval Museum (1002 Victory Drive). This series is made possible by generous support from the Georgia Humanities Council.

Thursday, August 25, 2022, at 7:00pm

Gene Eric Salecker will talk about his book Destruction of the Steamboat Sultana: The Worst Maritime Disaster in American History . The Sultana was a sidewheel Mississippi steamboat carrying almost two thousand recently released Union prisoners of war back north at the end of the Civil War. At 2:00am on April 27, 1865, her boilers exploded. Almost 1,200 people perished in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. After almost twenty-five years of continued research on the Sultana, and all those involved in the disaster, Salecker has gleaned unparalleled knowledge into every aspect of the disaster. His research, covering the National Archives, and thousands of pages of newspapers from around the world and government documents, including pension records and service records, has allowed him to tell the story of the Sultana as completely as possible.

Gene Eric Salecker is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the Sultana Disaster and owns the largest collection of Sultana memorabilia. He is a retired police officer and middle school teacher, and consultant for the Sultana Disaster Museum, Marion, Arkansas.
