Description

WORKSHOP/PLAK ATTACK:

In this workshop annex pasting session, we will start with a little background introduction by the artist, followed by a pasting tutorial. We will then venture outside to distribute the prints in the public space of Berlin.

Wanted: street artists, activists, civil-disobedients and cheerful wheatpasters A Paper Monument for the Paperless is a collective effort, initiated by conceptual artist Domenique Himmelsbach de Vries.

The project started from the wish to work collaboratively, and both merge art, activism and woodblock prints. The project is a collaboration with We Are Here/Wij Zijn Hier, a group for and by refugees living in Amsterdam. The idea was to literally give a face to undocumented refugees - by creating portraits of them and displaying them in public. Using the technique of woodcarving, the paper monument grew from a workshop for refugees into a collective artistic effort until 21 artists and makers created more then 60 portraits, for the purpose of printing them in large quantities and pasting them up through the city streets.

This workshop is part of the exhibition The Vivid Unknown during Refugee Week Berlin (18-24.06.2018). Refugee Week Berlin runs in parallel to and shares the aims of Refugee Week UK, organised by Counterpoints Arts since 1998. The goals are to facilitiate interconnections, helping refugees to share their experiences with a wider audience and raising awareness through the arts about topics ignored by the media. The program of the first Refugee Week Berlin includes an exhibition, performances, lectures and workshops, and addresses a society in transit that is challenged by technological, cultural and ecological shifts. The events take place in different sites throughout the city. The nonprofit project is co-organised by Christoph Braun (Refugio Berlin) and the artist Monika Dorniak, with the support of, among others, Counterpoints Arts UK, Refugio Berlin, project room rosalux, Konsept 83 Design Studio and volunteers.
