About this event

Allergy Alert - During this Term children will be in contact with raw and processed Honey. If you child is allergic to honey please discuss with the co-ordinator prior to purchasing a ticket.

The theme for 2021 is Food Fraud. Honey tampering has recently been a

contentious issue for Australian beekeepers and honey producers. The has

affected import and export markets, the commercialisation of foodstuffs,

as well as the health and wellbeing of bees and honey consumers.

Students will delve into the discussions of CFI- Criminal Food

Investigations.

These session will be delivered by our partner Sciren lead by science communicators Dr Bianca Warnock and Dr Deb Devis. Visit them at https://www.sciren.com.au/

NOTE CHANGE OF TIMINGS FOR SESSIONS

The maximum class size for these sessions will be 10 children.

INTERMEDIATES and JUNIORS (2-4pm)

The sessions for intermediate and juniors will follow the same path but the depth of investigation and knowledge shared will vary.

Session 1 (7 Aug 21) Entomology and Honey

Who are the clients of the Apistralian Police? We will investigate what differentiates insects, bugs and bees. Further the how and why of honey creation will be looked at to create a solid base from which to build further discussion and scientific investigation.

Session 2 (21 Aug 21) Honey vs Sugar

If you do a quick internet search about honey, one of the first things you'll see is 'hacks' to prove if you have 'real' honey. Is this the way we test for honey authenticity? It doesn't seem rigorous enough, does it? What happens when one country's testing methods aren't good enough to export the product? These are the questions to be examined in this session.

Session 3 (4 Sep 21) Spectrophotometry Carbohydrate Identification

Building on the knowledge of the first two sessions the new detectives will be introduced to spectrophotometry - the science of using light to detect or identify a substance. Through this scientific process it may be possible to perform carbohydrate identification in samples leading to a better testing regime to determine honey or foney!

Session 4 (18 Sep 21) Which is really honey?

This session looks to graduate our junior detectives in the honey fraud squad. They will put some of their learned skills to the test. Do we have honey or foney! A great practical application of science in our primary industry setting.
