Saturday Club for Term 1 will focus on mixed themes of Design, Strategy and Cryptology. Term21 aims to engage the minds of the children.

Junior (5-8 years)

The junior program will be an introduction to cryptology and will be dlivered by Lionel Bentley.

Session One (25 May 2019) - Quick Let Send a Secret. (Junior). In this session we will introduce the key concepts of cryptography that being the cipher, encryption and decrytpion. The children will explore historical ciphers such as the Ceasar Cipher and Atbash Cipher and the mechanical Ciphers such as Enigma. We will spend time making a cipher tool and then sending messages to each other practicing encryption and . (Ceasar Wheel)

Session Two (15 June 2019) –Code Crackers. (Junior). In this session we will continue with examining classical ciphers such as the Scytale tool. As a group we will then work to understand cryptanalysis (Code Cracking) of simple ciphers through letter frequency. (Scytale and Letter Frequency)

Session Three (29 June 2019) – Cipher Team Challenge (Junior ). The children will form small teams and intitally race to break a simple cipher and then decrypt a short piece of text provided to them. In round two the teams with a given piece of text will manually encrypt it with their choice of simple ciphers. An opposing team will then race to break the cipher. The session will conclude with a discussion of modern applications of cryptography, private messaging, banking, and currency.

Intermediate (8-12 yrs) and Seniors (12-17yrs)

This is combined session acknowleding that people come to chess at different ages and ability is not directly age based.

Chess helps build individual friendships and also teaches children about sportsmanship - how to win graciously and not give up when encountering defeat. For children with adjustment issues, there are many examples where chess has led to increased motivation, improved behaviour, better self-image, and even improved attendance. Chess provides a positive social outlet, a wholesome recreational activity that can be easily learned and enjoyed at any age.

This chess course will introduce you to the key rules of the game and the more important ideas you need to play a good and exciting game. You will learn the 4-Move mate (Scholar's Mate) and the Fried Liver Attack, the need for development and tactics like pins and forks and skewers and discovered attacks. We will also explore the endgame and learn strategies like the 'Lawn-mower'. And above all, the course will be fun - you will hear lots of wonderful stories about the players and games that all add combine to make chess a magical experience for millions of adults and juniors around the world.

The presenter will be from https://chessschool.com.au/ and the sessions actively tailored by the experienced staff to meet attending students needs be they novices or exponents.

What can I bring into the event?

Please bring water and a snack for the mid session break. Adults are catered for with tea, coffee and biscuits.

Do I need to remain with my child?

We ask that you stay on site while the children are in session to assist us in the even that they become upset or need support.
