Description
Join leading retailers, FAO and many more at the 2017 Brussels Stakeholder Update to hear about recent developments and what is next for GSSI.
In 2013 GSSI introduced its concept of developing a non-competitive approach to solving the proliferation of eco-certification schemes based on the internationally accepted FAO Guidelines.
Much has happened since: GSSI launched its Global Benchmark Tool in late 2015. In 2016 certification schemes signed up to benchmarked and three achieved recognition. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Alaska RFM and the Iceland RFM Certification Program committed to the GSSI Benchmark Process and demonstrated credible certification in line with the UN FAO Guidelines.
Major buyers, including Ahold Delhaize, Kroger, Morrison’s, Walmart, Metro Group and Sodexo have recognized these efforts and made GSSI recognition an integral part of their sustainable sourcing commitments, offering suppliers guidance and choice. “GSSI provides the mechanism that major seafood buyers need to mainstream sustainability in our supply chains, and to better reach and improve fishing and fish farming practices globally. We hope to see that GSSI recognition becomes the norm when sourcing certified seafood.” says Hugo Byrnes, Vice President Product Integrity at Ahold Delhaize.
As more seafood businesses from around the world are joining GSSI and further schemes engage in the benchmark process, 2017 is off to become a breakthrough year for credible seafood certification.
