GSI Modeling Workshop: MODFLOW-USG
NEW GROUNDWATER FLOW MODELING COURSE
WHAT: GSI Environmental Inc. is offering a 1.5 day workshop as an introduction to the MODFLOW-USG software for improved modeling of complex hydrogeologic systems. Model capabilities, features, applications, and available supporting tools will be discussed. The course will include hands-on exercises creating nested and quadpatch grids, geologic pinch-outs, linear features, and other complexities using MODFLOW-USG with the Groundwater Vistas Graphical User Interface (GUI).
WHO: The workshop is appropriate for modelers and managers/decision makers who interact with groundwater models or model products/results, and are interested in keeping abreast of the latest developments in modeling and MODFLOW. The course is most suitable for intermediate or advanced users who wish to learn MODFLOW-USG, the newest version of the MODFLOW software.
WHY: MODFLOW-USG, a recently released unstructured grid version of the MODFLOW groundwater flow model, provides far greater flexibility for gridding than prior versions. With capabilities for nested grids and subdiscretization of layers, the model can simulate complex stratigraphies, regimes such as geologic pinch-outs, linear features such as wells and streams, and other complexities that affect groundwater flow.
MODFLOW-USG is rapidly gaining in popularity due to its flexibility, robustness, and significantly faster runtimes than traditional MODFLOW schemes. The model is supported by various commercially available GUIs, public domain particle tracking routines, the parameter estimation code PEST, and related tools.
