Event description

Description

For Membership Professionals, Membership Committees and Teams, Religious Professionals, and anyone focused on helping congregations integrate visitors into the congregation. This workshop will focus on applying the Spiritual Leadership Framework to the membership and outreach ministries of congregations.

Presented by: Rev. David Pyle and Woullard Lett, New England Region UUA

Helping those who are just exploring our faith for the first time make the difficult transition into membership is about so much more than “growth”. It is about saving lives. It is about helping those in need of communities of liberal faith find them, and helping those communities welcome those who are new and be changed by that welcome. It is ministry in its purest sense. While congregational growth is often framed in terms of budget and capacity, at its core it is about growing the number of people who are transformed by the power of love and beloved community.

This workshop is designed to help membership committees and teams, membership professionals, and others to transition away from a utilitarian understanding of integrating new members into congregations, and towards a more missional and spiritual approach. It shifts the thinking away from visitors “learning about the church” and more towards the church learning about visitors on the journey towards membership. It will explore conceptual frameworks for a ministry of integrating the congregation with new members, but also some practical exercises and experiences.

We will:

  • Explore why visitors attend their first church events
  • Share together what those first church experiences are like
  • Engage several models of how to develop membership programs and teams
  • Explore the role of Membership Professionals
  • Discern the role of Professional Ministry in integrating visitors into a congregation
  • Name some of the ways in which our congregations can be unwelcoming
  • Express what it means to be a Beloved Community
  • Name some of the resistance in congregations to new members
  • Discern why visitors may not move towards membership
  • Develop a program possibility for a congregation’s membership ministries

Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the nature of the congregation’s membership programs as a ministry, and with the outlines of a plan to integrate a personal and spiritual engagement component within membership programs. Participants will also leave the workshop with a new understanding of the integration of membership programs and ministries within all of the ministries of a congregation.

LOCATION: Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord, NH at 274 Pleasant St, Concord, NH 03301

REGISTRATION FEE:

  • $25 per person when you register 1-4 from your congregation
  • $15 per person when you register 5 or more from your congregation

As learning takes root more effectively when four or more people from the same religious communities attend, you are encouraged to attend this workshop as a team.

While we know that not all individuals are in a position to pay these fees, since the learning is on behalf of the congregation, we assume that congregations will select and financially support participants who come. However, if these fees are prohibitive even to the congregation, please contact us at newengland@uua.org. We do not want cost to keep anyone away.

NOTE TO ALL ATTENDEES: Please bring your own bag lunch. Morning refreshments, drinks and afternoon snacks will be provided.

REGISTRATION CLOSES: Monday, March 4, or maximum capacity.
