Maria CatalanCome with CUESA on an all-day adventure, visiting two organic farms with inspiring stories. At the final stop, we'll pick our own berries.

First stop: Catalán Family Farm in Hollister. The farm’s founder, Maria Catalán, started out as a farmworker; after immigrating from Guerrero, Mexico, she learned the ropes of organic farm ownership at the Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) and has run her own farm ever since. She and her four children grow a wide range of organic vegetables and fruit, and they're always experimenting with new ideas (most recently, animals on the farm).

Next stop: Swanton Berry Farm in Davenport. We will enjoy lunch (including soup made with the farm's veggies and strawberry shortcake  for dessert) and hear about how Swanton became the first swanton teamorganic strawberry farm in California, the first organic farm to sign a contract with the United Farm Workers, and the first farm in the US to offer an employee stock ownership program. Then we’ll travel to a second Swanton location in Pescadero, where we’ll tour the fields, learn about Swanton’s growing practices, and get our hands purple from picking blackberries!

The tour costs $25 and includes lunch. We'll leave from and return to the Ferry Building in a comfortable bus.  U-pick berries are not included in the price of the tour and are sold by the pound.

There is no official minimum age, but the tour is geared toward adults and not recommended for young children.

Where to meet: In front of the Ferry Building (in the front, south side of the clocktower). Be there by 7:45; we leave at 8 am sharp. Please be prompt! We cannot wait for stragglers.

Note: The weather could be very dry and hot, or it could be cool. The bus is air conditioned. The tour will involve a fair amount of walking on uneven and muddy ground, so be prepared with sturdy shoes that can get dirty.

What to bring:
water bottle, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, long sleeves), layered clothing, Also consider bringing snacks, a camera, a book or other entertainment for the bus (it’s going to be a long ride), cash for the U-pick and farm stand purchases.

We will do our best to return by 6:00 pm, but traffic conditions can be unpredictable and we can't guarantee punctual arrival.

This tour is organized by CUESA, the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, as part of our mission to cultivate a sustainable food system. CUESA organizes 5-6 tours each year to Ferry Plaza Farmers Market farms and artisan food businesses in order to give eaters a first-hand look at where their food comes from and how it is produced. For more information or to sign up for our weekly email newsletter, visit www.cuesa.org.

We sincerely thank our farm tour sponsor, First National Bank of Northern California, for underwriting tour costs and Coach 21 for providing a discount on the bus charter fee.
