Event description
Learn about how grafting tomatoes works and the advantages of growing grafted heirlooms to minimize disease and improve plant vigor.

About this Event

In the home garden, Heirloom tomatoes are one of the hottest vegetables to grow. Grafted Growers of Raleigh will be talking about the advantages to growing grafted heirlooms , and how grafting works. Attendees will receive a free grafted heirloom tomato plant after the class.

• Grafted Growers is a high tech agricultural company that provides high quality grafted transplants local to Raleigh

• We use 90% less water and 75% less nutrients than other companies thanks to our vertical growing system

• The grafting process starts with two tomato plants, a rootstock and a scion, which are a couple week old and 2-3 inches tall. When we cut the rootstock tomato plant in half, the lower part of the tomato (hence, rootstock) is the base that we will put the scion tomato plant on. We cut the scion tomato plant (the tomato you get fruit from), and place it carefully on the rootstock, using a clip to keep the two plants together. This is the basics of grafting. After the graft, we place the grafted plant in a healing chamber, and the graft grows together, connecting the two separate plants to make one whole plant. We allow the plant to grow for another week after healing, so that the plant is strong when we ship to retailers and farmers.

• Grafting benefits include:

o Stronger/more vigorous plant going into the ground, meaning you will get more tomatoes than usual, and earlier than usual!

o Disease resistance to soil borne diseases, which are VERY common in heirloom tomato varieties. Examples of diseases rootstocks are resistant to include Fusarium wilt, bacterial wilt, southern blight, tomato spotted wilt virus, and many more.
