10 am - 12:15 pm : Community-Owned Solar Workshop

First, an education session about East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), the new public alternative to PG&E that Oakland and Alameda County residents will be automatically enrolled in this Fall. We are still building power, organizing and advocating to the EBCE Board to prioritize local, community-based clean energy, local family-sustaining jobs, and other community benefits, thanks to the leadership of the East Bay Clean Power Alliance.

The East Bay Shared Solar Collaborative is now working to create a community-owned solar energy program within EBCE - called Community Shared Solar - for renters and low-income people to cooperatively own and build wealth from community solar facilities, further growing clean energy jobs in Oakland. We will share the model that we’ve developed for feedback from the community, and explore next steps together to make our vision a reality.

The Cypress Mandela Training Center is a community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of the people it serves by providing pre-apprenticeship construction (including solar installation) and life skills training along with employment assistance.

Part 2: People’s Community Medics Training - 1 - 2:45 pm

Part 2 of the Forum will include a training by Sharena Thomas, of Peoples Community Medics, in practical, life-saving emergency medicine. Sharena has trained hundreds of Oakland residents in hands-on trauma medicine -- such as how to prevent someone from dying from gunshot or knife wounds before the ambulance arrives, how to respond in disaster situations, etc.

Part 3: Music! - 3 - 4 pm

Oakland-based Namorados da Lua (Moon Lovers) band will bring danceable Afro-Brazilian rhythms - because the movement that plays (and dances!) together, stays together.

Event Goals:

  1. Educating the community about East Bay Community Energy launching in June 2018, and engage them in being involved to shape the program to meet people’s needs by joining the East Bay Clean Power Alliance.

  2. Educating the community about the potential of community shared solar to benefit renters and low-income communities with ownership of solar energy projects and to create good, local clean energy jobs.

  3. Listening to better understand people’s priorities in shaping what the community shared solar program should look like to best meet community needs.

  4. Building support for East Bay Community Energy to create opportunities for community shared solar.

  5. Training community members in practical life-saving emergency medicine.

This Forum will be the first in a series of Community Forums that the Oakland Climate Action Coalition is organizing in 2018 to bring community members and organizations together to share strategies and develop action plans for advancing our Peoples Climate Resilience Campaign, at the intersection of human rights and climate justice.

Thank you for joining us on March 3rd and for sharing the invitation with your networks!
