Event description

Description

This hands-on educator training will assist K-12 teachers in creating three-dimensional, project-based lessons in Environmental Education for their classrooms.

Workshop classes will be taught by professionals from the Theodore Payne Foundation, California Subject Matter Projects, the Huntington's Education Program, community experts and others.

This multi-session workshop encourages a field-course model of content-rich subject-matter exploration that will spark the joy of discovery in all. Through structured activities with horticultural, educational, and arts professionals, we will explore the diverse array of California native plants, our urban ecosystem, plant-animal relationships, and plant adaptations to environment, so that participants will be able to spark students’ curiosity and help them become better systematic thinkers able to identify and analyze complex data. The program will also investigate and consider California’s rich cultural history, the life ways of California's first peoples, the development of the Los Angeles River and water rights -- all with a goal of helping develop integrated research/hands-on curricula that can be brought back to and continued in the classroom.

The workshop will enable participants to incorporate disciplinary core ideas, cross-cutting concepts, Next Generation Science Standards, and State of California Environmental Principles into their teaching.

Join us on this journey of discovery. Learn practical conservation and stewardship methods and ways in which ecosystem and habitat can be sustained and improved with just the small effort of “re-wilding” our urban environment. Engage best-practice models for teaching and for exploring our environment, so that students may more directly investigate and connect to the world around them.
