September 21st Grow-Cook-Eat Tour

9:45am – Attendees will gather at the main entrance of the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia at 46 Plaza Way, Clayton, Georgia

10:00am – Depart the Food Bank to begin our Farm & Food experience

Our tour will include the following agri-tourism businesses:

Wolffork Valley Farm

This is a beautiful farm set in the most gorgeous valley in Rabun County. You will get to go out on the farm and be with the sheep and chickens. You will have an experience like none other on this wonderful family owned farm.

After the tour of the farm we will get to have a delicious tasting from items on the farm. Your tastebuds and stomach will thank you.

Barkers Creek Gristmill at the Hambidge Center

Barker’s Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since the mid 1800’s. Mary Hambidge built the current mill in 1944 at the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers came into the area in the late 1820’s.

The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. It was converted from a wooden spoked, steel-rimmed wheel to the current metal spokes in the 1960’s. The mill has been renovated three times in its life, the most recent in the late 1980’s. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16″ flint/granite stones. It was built by the Meadow’s Milling Company in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

There will be a tasting at the Hambidge Center after the tour of the Gristmill.

Blue Ridge Honey

Blue Ridge Honey Co. is a family business, owned and operated by Bob & Suzette Binnie, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northeast Georgia.

Our bee yards are located in Northeast Georgia, Western North Carolina and South Georgia. Our honey is pure, natural and raw. We do not pasteurize or micro filter our honey.

Bob was voted the 2003 Georgia State Beekeeper of the Year by the Georgia State Beekeepers Association. He is often a guest speaker at many clubs in the southeast and is often asked to teach classes at Beekeeping Schools.

You will get a treat when we you get to taste all the delicious honeys after our tour of the Blue Ridge Honey Company.

Tomlin’s BBQ

Owners Stephen & Jane Tomlin have been winning awards at BBQ Competitions throughout the Southeast since 1997. In 2005 they decided to go public with their BBQ and opened their Little Red BBQ Shack at Osage Farms Produce Market, where they serve up some of the best pulled pork, ribs, chicken, brisket and smoked turkey you’ve ever tasted. These are all served up with their signature “Georgia Vinegar BBQ Sauce”.

We will also get to peruse the famous Osage Farm Farmer’s Market after we enjoy a delicious tasting of Tomlin’s BBQ.

RM Rose Distillery

With some of the richest history in the trade, the R.M. Rose Company helped set the standard for American whiskey as we know it today. With that same pioneering spirit, we have been working hard, and have spared no expense in building beautiful old-fashioned copper pot stills and reviving the classic recipes, to bring you the finest whiskies on earth.

RM Rose Distillery is still to be confirmed for this tour.

Farmer’s Market at the Northeast Georgia Food Bank by Simply Homegrown

The Simply Homegrown Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, May through November at the Covered Bridge Plaza. For this tour there will be a small sampling of the farmer’s market. The items from the farmer’s market will be used in the Chef Demonstration by Gayle Darugh.

Teaching kitchen Chef Demonstration – Chef Gayle Darugh of the Beechwood Inn

Gayle Darugh was selected as a “Best Chefs America,” placing her in the top 1% of our nation’s chefs. This selection process was accomplished by asking our nation’s chefs who they most respected. The process was calculated to accurately record the opinions of leading chefs about the talent of their colleagues nationwide. Gayle Darugh has also served as national president of the American Wine Society.

You will completely enjoy your time with Gayle Darugh as she demonstrates in the kitchen then your tastebuds will be thrilled when you taste the fruits of her labors.

4:00pm – Official tour ends. If Tour Participants would like a tour of the Food Bank NEGa and their facilities one will be offered at this time.

Food Bank of Northeast Georgia – Teaching Kitchen

The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia is located in Clayton, Georgia here in Rabun County. This is a spotlight program that is going to be a model for Food Banks around the country. As part of the Food Hub they have included a teaching kitchen that will be used for various programs, one of which is the Grow-Cook-Eat Tours. The hope for the teaching kitchen for our community and others is to show people how fun and easy it is to use fresh and locally grown products to cook for your family. The teaching kitchen falls directly into the ideals of the Farm to Table movement here in Rabun County. A short cooking demonstration and tasting will be provided at the teaching kitchen.

Tour Stops are subject to change so check back to confirm the stop destinations.

Your Step On Guide – Helen Kleiber

Helen was not born and raised in Rabun County but she has been coming here and ultimately moved here many, many years ago. Helen and her husband live up the mountain in Sky Valley, Georgia, the highest city in the state. Helen knows this county very well as she is often times a tourist in her own back yard. Helen will be a great guide to offer insights about the places we will be visiting but also what we don’t get to visit so that you will have ideas on your next visit to Rabun County.
