Description

We ask that everyone who applies for the GROUNDED residency attends a site visit to the residency space. Please book a place using this eventbrite service.

GROUNDED is a new kind of residency offering three artists unique and free studio space for 6 months in exchange for small scale interventions. Hosted by Growing Underground, GROUNDED was created in May 2017 through the Battersea Arts Centre Agents of Creative Change program and developed with artist Amy Pennington.

Growing Underground is an urban farm located in Clapham growing micro-herbs and salad leaves in former WW2 air raid shelters using hydroponics and LEDS. GROUNDED is a pilot program that seeks to find the right fit between artists that need space (the constant struggle for a London based artist) or a change of scenery, and a socially minded business that has room to spare.

GROUNDED offers three artists’ studio space in these unique tunnels for a period of six months. Each space has the potential to be a minimum of 800 sq. ft. Due to the space’s distinctive nature, there are certain restrictions that will be an issue for some. In addition, the studio spaces will only be accessible at this point in the project Mon- Fri, 7am – 6pm, and Saturdays 9 – 4pm. Despite this, we are hoping to find artists that embrace the nature of the space, and will be inspired and responsive to the environment, the history, and its potential.

In exchange for the studio space, we ask three things of the artist.

Over the course of six months each artist will deliver:

• 1 community workshop (for a small group no larger than 10)

• 1 staff curated experience (i.e. a curated playlist for a day)

• 1 blog entry (to be posted on artist’s own and GU’s site)

The application process will consist of two stages: First Stage: Due to the unique nature of the studio spaces, we feel it is vital for applicants to visit the space before applying.

• Site visit to be held on July 30th, 12- 5 pm

• Click here to book time slot

• Spaces are only available on a first come, first served basis. Second Stage:

• Written A4 proposal based on three questions to be distributed at the open day, followed by an interview on a further date if selected.

Key Dates:

• July 30 – Open day

• August 10 – Proposal deadline

• August 19 – Interview date

• September 4 – Residency commences

We regret that due to step access to the building the site it is currently not accessible to wheelchair users. We apologize in advance, this is something we are hoping to improve in the near future.
