Grief, Loss, Grace & Nurturing: An African-American Perspective

Saturday, October 21, 2017

Mount Calvary Baptist Church

608 N Horners Lane

Rockville, MD 20850

Continuing education

2.5 contact hours for social workers.

Description

This interactive workshop will explore multiple layers of loss and grief that are associated with the lived experiences of many African American people in America. In one study, African Americans reported higher levels of complicated grief symptoms than Caucasians. However, the research reflects that only a few empirical studies have been done on different ethnic groups outside of the majority. The workshop will provide participants an opportunity to discuss some of the contextual and cultural perspectives of grief and loss from the lens of African-American experiences.  Traditions of mourning, bereavement, and spiritual practices will be covered, along with types of grief considered appropriate and inappropriate in mainstream society.
