Description

Grief and Gratitude: Feeding the Soul of the World

A day-long intensive on Salt Spring Island with
Elisa Lee & Josea Tamira Crossley

Why Grief Work?
Many of us seldom have the chance to be open about our pain and grief. Western society conditions us to turn away from or suppress our pain, and we are often encouraged to 'stay positive' or 'look on the bright side.’ Yet amongst the oldest peoples it has been said that grief and love are but two sides of the same coin, and if we suppress our grief for too long, we also forget how to love. And yet again, enduring our grief without the support of community can be unbearable. Our modern world has lost the art of creating communal space for grief to be held and witnessed. In order to return again and again to our fullest joy, aliveness and love for life we must express and process our grief.

The sacred work of grief allows us to honour and own emotions that colonized society has tried to hide and suppress - emotions that are rooted in our love and sense of justice for self, community culture and planet. Grief honored through ritual builds heart skills - compassion, humanity, resilience. When we share and witness each other’s grief in community, it can transform in a profound way that simply is not possible in isolation.

The Invitation:
This is a day of guided, intentional ceremony, held in confidence among participants. Utilizing singing, writing practice, group/partner work and a profound communal ritual inspired by the work of Francis Weller (5 Gates of Grief) and Joanna Macy (Truth Mandala), we will tend our collective and personal grief. Everyone will have the opportunity to share and express if they feel called but there is no requirement to speak in the group; witnessing is a crucial and invaluable role, and your attentive presence makes a difference.
