Description

For those who appreciate history, art, and creative genius...

The Nebraska State Capitol holds many distinctions: It hosts the nation's only unicameral, non-partison legislature; it is one of only three skyscraper-type capitol buildings in the country; and it can be seen from more than 20 miles away. But the most important distinction is that the Capitol itself is a supreme work of art containing the largest collection of art by the legendary Lee Lawrie. The Sower atop the building is likely the most recognizable work to most Nebraskans, however, there are many pieces on and throughout the building with stories rich in history and lore.

Gregory Paul Harm has studied the work of artist Lee Lawrie for the better part of two decades. He has painstakingly photographed, catalogued, analyzed, and preserved the important history of each detail of this Nebraska treasure in his book "Lee Lawrie's Prairie Deco: History in Stone at the Nebraska State Capitol".

Harm will share his knowledge of our beautiful Capitol building, and the life and legacy of the artist who created its unique features in pictures and stories. Join us for Harm's presentation, inside details about the how and why of certain pieces, and an expanded view of Lawrie's work all over the world -- including several works on buildings at Boys Town, the Atlas at Rockefeller Center, and many others.

"Gregory Paul Harm's book Lee Lawrie's Prairie Deco is a long overdue work on one of the greatest works by the American architectural sculptor Lee Lawrie. Mr. Harm's thorough research and well-written narrative provide new insights into the creation of the iconic details that went into design of the Nebraska State Capitol. This American architectural masterpiece comes to life with his beautiful archival and current photos."
