Event description

Description

Established in 1975 in a convent that was transformed into a comprehensive residential treatment program for the formerly incarcerated, Greenhope Services for Women is one of the few woman-centered facilities in New York State that empowers women affected by substance abuse and the criminal justice system. In 2011, Greenhope opened Kandake House in East Harlem, a 43,000 square foot facility that provides an array of treatment, counseling, educational and vocational programs, in addition to housing for 72 residents, 28 of whom are housed with their child.

Join Open House New York for a tour of Kandake House to hear from the staff of Greenhope and the building’s architects how this new facility helps support Greenhope’s work to help women reclaim their lives, reunite with their families, and rebuild their communities.

Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.

This program is organized as part of Spaces of Justice, a yearlong series organized by Open House New York to explore the architecture and infrastructure of New York’s justice system. Major support has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Free admission is made possible by a grant from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation.
