Do you use live camels to race?

As much fun as it would be to race live camels, unfortunately building codes will not allow for us to have them inside. Instead, sponsored WOODEN camels dressed in their finest racing gear are used to represent their sponsor or organization.

How does the camel race work?

Real money is exchanged for "Camel Bucks". Then use the camel bucks to wager on your favorite camel for each race. Six camels are lined up for each race and assigned a number. Two dice are rolled. The camel that matches the number of the rolled dice, moves ahead one space. The first camel to reach the tenth space is the "winner" of that round and will move on to the championship race. If the camel you wagered on wins the race, you win as well. Winners are paid back in camel bucks that can be exchanged for cash at the end of the night. Winning odds are computed pari-mutuel style, just like a horse race.

How many races are there?

There are 4 races, a consolation race, and then the championship race.

Can I sponsor a camel?

Camels are usually sponsored by local businesses or organizations that want to promote their name. However, individuals have been know to sponsor a camel as well. If you would like to sponsor a camel, please contact Karen Miller at rx2bee@hotmail.com or Kathy Bazany at appygirl1230@yahoo.com. You can also send a message through our FaceBook page "Greater Muskegon Optimist Club Camel Race".

How much does it cost to sponsor a camel?

Entry fee for a camel is $100. This entry fee also includes two admission tickets. However, a camel purchase or rental is REQUIRED. Rental of a camel is free but the camel must be returned at the end of the night in good condition. You can purchase your camel for an additional $50 if you would like. This will allow you to take your decorated camel home with you at the end of the night and use him for next year's race!

What is included wtih my admission ticket?

Each ticket includes admission to the event as well as an amazing dinner provided by Dave's Kountry Katering. A cash bar will be available for mixed drinks and beer.

What else will there be to do besides bet on the camels?

Before the race begins, all the camels will be on display in their fine "racing" attire. This is the time where you get to help choose the Most Popular Camel. The Most Popular Camel is chosed by how many votes (a.k.a. dollars) are shoved into their voting box. Feel free to vote early and often. Stuffing the ballot box is allowed here! There will be 50/50 raffles, the always fun "Heads or Tails" game, the numbered popcorn bag game with the "Man Cave" prize, and of course, the big prize of the night.....$500 in scratch off lottery tickets. In additon to the many raffles of the night, there will also be numberous gift baskets that you could win.

Can I donate a gift basket to raffle or make a monetary donation?

If you own a business and would like to donate some items to help promote your business, please feel free to put one together. All gifts are welcome. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to help fund programs for kids in the Muskegon Area. Please feel free to contact Karen Miller or Kathy Bazany through our FaceBook page "Greater Muskegon Optimist Club Camel Race".

This is a fund raiser. What will the money be used for?

This is a fund raiser organized by the Greater Muskegon Optimist Club. All proceeds will stay in the greater Muskegon Area and be used to fund programs to help positively affect the youth of the Muskegon area. In the past, funds have been used to help support backpack programs, to provide MCC scholarships, to sponsor Boys & Girls Club All-Star Awards, and to give financial support to the new Covenant Hall which provides housing for homeless teenagers so that they may finish high school.

I have a group of friends that want to go together. Is there a discount for group ticket purchases?

There is no discount for group tickets. However, if you purchase 8 tickets or more, a table for your group will be reserved under your name. Otherwise, seating is by general admission and the Optimists can not guarantee that everyone in your group will be able to sit next to one another.

You may consider sponsoring a camel for $100. You will receive the 2 free admission tickets included with sponsorship. Purchase six more tickets and this will make the 8 tickets required to reserve your table. Plus you will already have a group to cheer your camel to victory!

What is the Greater Muskegon Optimist Club?
