Event description

Description

Join us as we hike the full perimeter of Manhattan in one day! Over ~10-12 hours and ~34 miles, we'll see all of this amazing island, from Inwood to Battery Park and from Spanish Harlem to Chelsea Piers, all the while meeting & conversing with new friends. This year's Stoll is the 6th Annual - as any participant of the past 5 Strolls can attest, it's an amazing experience and well worth your Saturday. You'll come away with new friends, newfound appreciation for this City, and a new fun fact for icebreakers and cocktail parties. Any and all are welcome, so invite your friends!

We hope this year's will be the biggest Stroll yet. If you are interested (and even if you can only join for part of the day), we encourage you to click "Register" and select one of the starting times/places (Note: group size is capped to comply with NYC Park Rules; if you'd like to be sure you're in a group with someone or you want to change your group after registering, shoot us a note at GreatStroll@googlegroups.com & we’ll do our best to accommodate). All groups start and finish near Grant's Tomb / Columbia University. After the Stroll, everyone is welcome to a homemade Italian dinner at Corpus Christi School (121st / Broadway). If you plan to join for dinner, we kindly ask that you buy a "ticket". This is mainly to give us a more definite headcount, but it also helps defray the cost of ingredients. Be sure to note any dietary restrictions you might have so that we can do our best to accommodate you.

While the Stroll itself is 100% free, we encourage you to use the occasion to support a favorite charity. Fundraising is absolutely NOT required to join, but if you're going to trek 34 miles, you might as well do it for a good cause while you're at it! If you don't have a favorite cause of your own, we suggest the Sisters of Life, a community of religious women devoted to serving pregnant women and new (often single) mothers. For more information about the Sisters, visit their website: www.sistersoflife.org. The Sisters of Life are registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. If you or any sponsors make a donation to the Sisters online, please put "Great Stroll 2018" as a response for "Any prayer requests..." so that the Sisters can tally up a Stroll donation total.

More details are forthcoming for those who register, but a few preliminaries:

  • The Great Stroll proceeds rain or shine: bring a raincoat and/or umbrella as needed!
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes & temperature-appropriate attire.
  • Pack a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle for picknicking/refueling along the way.
  • There are public bathrooms & water fountains at many points along our route.
  • All participants must be considerate of passerby and non-Strollers (e.g. by giving runners/bikers space to pass). To that end, we ask that you adhere to your selected group and help keep groups distinct - groups above a certain size are not allowed on the paths we intend to follow, so kindly help us keep in compliance with the law!

Note: in registering for the Great Stroll, you recognize that the Great Stroll is not a formal institution, and all organizers are informal volunteers who may not be held liable for any harms incurred during the Stroll (sore legs or otherwise), except perhaps any harm attributable to gross negligence or malice. Further, in participating in the Stroll, you acknowledge the risks inherent to this activity and assume such voluntarily. Thus, you agree not to hold any of us personally liable for your free choice to join us (besides, who sues their friends? That’d just be awkward).
