Event description

Description

Registration is open: please register by Monday, September 17th!

The inaugural Great Rivers Wilderness Skills Institute was created out of a need for training in the specialized skills required for working in, managing, and stewarding federally designated wilderness areas. Great Rivers is an immersive program where students learn and live together for four to six days in the midst of the Shawnee National Forest. Students choose one of the following two tracks:

  • Traditional Skills with Crosscut Saw A/B: Receive classroom-based instruction and field experience to safely use a crosscut and receive your certification. Also, learn tool re-handling techniques and map and compass skills.
  • Foundations of Wilderness Stewardship: Learn key principles of crew management and leadership, backcountry preparation and travel, increase understanding of the Forest Service Wilderness Stewardship Performance (WSP) elements and projects, and spend time in nearby Wilderness areas talking about local and regional issues.

Students also have the opportunity to attain their Wilderness First Aid Certification. The (WFA) course will provide you with the skills to recognize and handle many medical issues in the backcountry. This course has limited space. It is offered on November 11-12, and should be taken in addition to the Traditional Skills or Foundations of Wilderness Stewardship track. WFA also includes First Aid/CPR, a prerequisite for the Traditional Skills track.

Lodging, also free-of-charge, and camping, are available. Participants can purchase a meal plan for a small fee.

**Please only register for one 'ticket' per person. For example, 'Track 1/WFA/Meal plan' registers you for your track, the Wilderness First Aid course, and the meal plan so you do not need to register for Track 1 on it's own.**
