Event description

Description

Great Books explores mystical thinking by reading from texts of great spiritual thinkers throughout the ages to spur us on to see our lives, and the surrounding society, from a very different perspective. Every week, we read 30-page excerpts of one book, then spend the class discussing the ideas, as well as how they might impact the manner in which we view the world, and our place within it. Excerpts will be provided in digital (pdf) format.

Classes will be held on the following ten dates (Tuesdays, 2-5 pm) at the Wild Project (195 E. 3rd Street, NY's East Village): September 25; October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; November 6, 27; December 4, 11)

Readings will include:

  • Mirabai (Hindu)

  • Lieh-Tzu and Zhuangzi (Taoist)

  • Mumonkan (Zen Buddhism)

  • Songs of Female Masters (Buddhism)

  • Seneca (Stoic)

  • Rabi'a and Sa'adi (Sufi)

  • Julian of Norwich (Christian)

  • Mystical Tales (Jewish)

  • Black Elk (Sioux)

  • Thomas Merton (Christian)

"The highest literature transcends regionalism and through it, when we are properly attuned, we realise the essential oneness of the human family."

Jay Mazo, International Gita Society
